Missionary life is anything but boring. We lived in a
second floor apartment in the Dominican Republic. It
had a courtyard with a prize rooster that crowed
constantly sitting proudly in it. At night sometimes the
rooster would crow for no reason at all and I would lay
there with a pillow over my head until I couldn't take it
any longer. I'd roll out of our water bed making tidal
waves, go over to the window and shout down to the
rooster, "Shut up! We're trying to sleep." This was
stupid because chickens don't respond like a dog to
orders. One night as I lay in bed with the pillow over
my head, I had an idea. I filled up a bucket half full
with water and threw the water at it; a direct hit! As
simple as that! After that, we slept like babies. So
began a regular ritual where the rooster would begin
crowing, I'd fill the bucket of water, and drench the
bird. One morning, an angry voice called to me from
down below. "Seth, why did you throw water on our
grandmother?"

There is a common expression in English referring
to a blue moon. When people say something
happens once in a blue moon, they mean that it
happens only very rarely. The expression blue
moon actually refers to the second full moon
occurring in any calendar month. A second full
moon is not called a blue moon because it is blue or
is any different colour from the first moon of the
month. Instead, it is called a blue moon because it is
so rare. However, the expression blue moon may
have come into existence in reference to unusual
circumstances in which the moon actually appeared
blue. The eruption of the Krakatau volcano in 1883
left dust particles in the atmosphere, which clouded
the sun and gave the moon a bluish tint. This
particular phenomenon may have given rise to the
expression that we use today. Another example
occurred more than a century later. When Mount
Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, the
moon again took on a blue tint.
